Some of the best Heurigen you can find in Vienna are in the Grinzing area, in the northern part of Vienna. You absolutely HAVE to go and visit at least one of them if you want to say you've been to Vienna!
Traditionally, they are wine taverns where the freshest local wine is served. In specific periods of the year, however, you will have the chance to taste the Most or the Sturm, wines produced at different stages before the final product.
Of course, if you will decide to visit one of these typical taverns, you will also get the chance to taste some of the Austrian good food! Make sure to taste the 'Liptauer', which is a spicy cheese spread made with goat, sheep or quark's cheese! Other small snacks the inns offer are various sausages and cheese selections ad well as the 'Semmel', bread rolls.
If you plan on going to the Heurigen for a night out, you should know that most are usually only open until midnight.
Of course, in Grinzing you can find many different wineries. Hajszan Neumann is one of the best wine restaurants and Taverns you can find. They serve their own biodynamical wine in a modern and elegant ambience. Another place to go, is the family owned Heurigen Hengel-Haselbrunner. Here you can enjoy the outside garden and taste different meats and cheeses with a large group of people. Often, the owners organise special events in the evening, check the program here. Another well known Heurigen in the neighborhood is Kierlinger, an inn that offers a cozy outside garden defined by old tall trees. Here you can sit around big wooden tables with a bunch of friends. Of course, the wine served is home-made too!
If you want to visit an inn that has been open for almost two centuries, then you should visit Mayer am Pfarrplatz, a winery that opened in 1817 and served its own wine ever since. In mid-May you can enjoy delicious asparagus, make sure you check their website as well! If you are planning on surprising your partner with a romantic date, then you should definitely visit Zawodsky: this is THE place to go if you want to drink wine between the wineyard's hills.
