Das Riesenrad - Giant Ferris Wheel
Vienna
All Top Attractions
A ride in the Riesenrad means enjoying the view of the city from almost 200 feet up. The Giant Ferris Wheel is open year round and is one of the most frequented attractions in Vienna. It is located right at the entrance to the Prater amusement park - which is a nostalgic amusement park that will remind visitors of how theme parks looked like in the year 1900 - not much has changed since then.
The Giant Ferris Wheel was built in 1896/97 by an British engineer Walter Basset and wasn’t the only one of its kind back then: Basset built similar wheels – extremely popular at the end of the 19th century – in Chicago, London and Paris as well.
The Riesenrad is located in the Vienna Prater Park. This park, one of the most famous parks in Vienna, is amusement park for many (especially locals), a place of nostalgic dreams for others, but an oasis of greenery for almost everyone living in Vienna - used to escape urban life and city stress whenever possible - especially during the summer months.
